The Maliceets were at their fort at Meductic 7 miles below Woodstock just after close of hunting season - They were dancing {dancing} outside the fort, & heard a woman's voice faintly say, Mohawk! Mohawk!

One hastened to the river & saw a squaw in a canoe. She said that they had been up at Temiscouata Lake & 500 Mohawks came with their canoes. She [one struck through] Her family had been encamped near the outlet, were surprized, husband & children murdered & she saved as a guide; put in a canoe between 2 chiefs.

She signalled a portage on the Little Madawaska R. near the St. John. She told them there were no more falls & the warriors fell asleep. She let them drift down to Grand Falls - paddled canoe inshore with the paddle [?] & pushed it out into currents. She gave the Maliceet war cry as they went over - & escaped in a canoe that was unharmed
