I Charles R. Pike of lawful age do testify and say that I have been trading in Calais, for several years, & have been in the habit of buying & selling potatoes. I had a claim on a quantity of potatoes, that were in Mr. Woods cellar in the fall of 1856, & were sold by Hugh Slater.

A part of them were sold at auction to pay my claim. Prior to the sale they were picked over twice by Mr. Slater & were in good order and condition. They were said to be the best lot of potatoes brought from Nova Scotia that fall. Mr. Solomon B. Pool had a lot of Nova Scotia potatoes at the same time & he then told me that the Slater potatoes were better than his. The price of potatoes, in this market, in the spring of 1857, was from one dollar & twenty five cents to one dollar and fifty cents a bushel.
