Sir,

In the absence of Gen'l Henry I am requested to read his correspondence yours of today received. I am aware there is to be a change in the Indian Agency and well know the Gen'ls feelings in the matter and I trust you do also. He is as are many of our strongest Rep friends in favor of Mr. Hoskins heretofore clerk for Mr. Staples and fully understands the whole Indian matter.

Mr. Staples has resigned in favor of Mr. H. and we hope there will be no opponents until after the Gen'l returns from the [?]. Expected a week from today.

It is a pity to have so influential a man as Mr. S. has been & could be to the Party were it not for the one thing that has brought this about. (Drink)
