National Defense Headquarters c/o F.B.J Augusta, Maine

[Illegible P.S. note at top of letter]

Dear Sirs:

Perhaps you will not welcome this letter, but the following things are taking place every day.

A dark green coach with four husky men called at Broch's log cabin gas station today, but parked behind the station and bought no gas.

One man went into house nearby. The rest stayed in car I believe. Another car called after gas, whose driver was a woman very friendly

2.

to Mrs. Broch. She could raise no-[?] with the horn, yet the green car sat in sight. She drove away. Shortly after the man who left the car to go into house, came out, got into dark green coach with the other men and drove up towards N. Anson and Canada. He sells Sunoco gas, but no sign in station.

Broch is an alien. Came into Maine about 1919.

Those men could have been German, en route to Canada.

3.

They have found a nest of them in Aroostook Co. so I hear. There are plenty of tourist places going north, especially around Wyman Lake, where tourists seem to live now.

Broch is peculiar. Has no steady job half the time. It would be a good thing to investigate every tourist camp in northern Maine, as well as lumber and G. Northern Paper Co. camps, and Kennebec Log Driving Camps also. They could contain a large number of German soldiers and arsenals. The Communists, hereabouts, say that there will be an uprising soon.

4.

They say before September. We are poorly prepared for a revolution. No interim defenses at all. This Communist & Nazi revolution will be soon.

There are plenty of fields near town in R2 [?] where Parachute armies could drop. One is directly opposite my house, almost concealed from Highway by dense foliage. A good road through woods from that field, leads directly into the [?] of Madison. There are no defenses of any kind for that kind of an interior attack which Germany [?] is planning soon to do.

5.

Many of these tourist camps are German and Communist spies, who are working continually to help Hitler & Stalin, by traveling and marking good places in hopes for parachute armies to drop and stragetical points like dams, bridges, etc.

I have personally seen the following cars doing this, marking maps, in strategical points near town.

  1. 326-U90 Ill. Four women, one old, one young, marking field below Madison near Bird Lake.
  2. 5G 7537 New York World's Fair man, swarthy, 5'-6" staying in [?]. Called at restaurant in Norridgewock. Talked confidentially with waitress.
  3. 719-993 Mass. parked on state road from Norridgewock to Skow. Driver invisible.

Jordon's Refrigeration Truck #3 would stand investigation. The driver is Communist I believe.

6.

We have 100,000 active Nazi spies in our country, busy every day in plotting, or canvassing for new converts amongst the German American people or other nationalities. Our Depression has even made many native Americans for Hitler and Stalin also [?].

If our F.B.I force are truly intended to clean up subversives, then its force should be increased to 10,000 rather than 1,000 as it is at present. It should incorporate the American Legion as an active auxiliary as well as Boy & Girl Scout organizations.

7.

Our nation needs aeroplanes, 10,000 or more at once. Also submarines 2,000 Also Destroyers 2,000 Also Bomber planes 10,000 And we need mines all around the true America.

We also need extremely bad, Interior Defense like anti-aircraft and machine guns, air raid shelters and gas masks.

The Communists and Nazi element caused by the [?] plan to rise up soon, to block and paralyze our Defense preparations. "A word to the wise" etc.

Respectfully [?]

[Newspaper clipping about US Air Waves Guardians inserted in letter]

The Lone Wolf aeroplane called at [?] and left a two way radio in both places it is reported on good authority. The enclosed clipping shows a detector for 2 way radios [? ? ]. A Vincent Quint makes these [?]. He lives in New Portland.

[Three scraps of paper follow, much of which is illegible].
