President of the Convention.

A Proclamation:

whereas his Excellency John Brooks, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, by his Proclamation of the twenty sixth day of February last, has recommended to the People of said Commonwealth to observe Thursday, the sixth day of April next, as a day of Fasting and Prayer. And Whereas Maine, then a part of that Commonwealth, has since become a separate and independent state: it is now, therefore, recommended to the good People of the State of Maine, in conformity with the ancient usage of our venerable forefathers, and in compliance with the aforesaid Proclamation of our late Chief Magistrate, to observe the same accordingly. And in this, while they recognize a pious regard to the primitive customs of our ancestors, it will be grateful to reflect, that the last act, by which we are reminded of the authority of our own parent State, is an exhortation to the duties of piety and religion.
