having bivouacked Friday night at James' Bridge on the Chickahominy, Saturday night at Diascand Bridge, Sunday night at James City Court House, and Monday night at Williamsburg- Wednesday ( 20th ) we embarked at Yorktown on the Steamship Merrimac, four other regiments being put on board the same vessel- The quarters of our regiment on board were uncomfortable in the extreme, the men being stowed away in bunks closely arranged between decks when there was little light or ventilation- Friday ( 22nd ) the Merrimac arrived at Alexandria and the regiment disembarked and bivouacked that night a mile or two outside the city- Saturday morning ( 23d ) we were put on board the cars of the Orange and Alexandria R.R. and taken to Warrenton Junction, where we marched the same evening to within two miles of Bealton Station; our regiment being posted in the extreme front as the advance guard of the division, and so continuing during the advance of the lines to the Rappahannock, which river we reached and picketed along its banks- sending scouts across Monday ( 25th ) - Wednesday ( 27th ) near noon, we received orders to move immediately to the rear and join the brigade- which we did, marching back along the railroad and arriving at a point near Cattell's Station the same evening ( a march of about twenty miles ) where we rested for a few hours and started again early in
