which I as well as Dr. Carr had to [?] attendance for 4 or 5 days in [Washington?] This inconvenience & loss makes Dr. Carr think very seriously of getting a transfer to another Regt. where he may act under a regular commission, a change which I would much regret, as well as the whole of the 4th Maine Regt. I, therefore, respectfully ask, if possible to remove Dr. Hawkins, either by inducing him to resign or transfer him to some other position more consistent with his health, than the arduous duties of a regimental surgeon, & thereby have Dr. Carr permanently established under an unconditional commission.

A removal of a Surgeon who is acceptable to a Regt. by transfer or other wise is generally the cause of much trouble and inconvenience, & ought, if possible, be avoided
