Petition of Dummer Sewall Junior of Chesterville, for a grant of land on account of his being the first male child born in said town, was read & referred to the committee on State Lands. Sent up for concurrence.
Remonstrance of Reuben Freeman & als against the petition of Benjamin Morrill Junr & als was read & referred to the committee on the incorporation of towns. Sent up for concurrence.
Bill to divide the town of Edgecomb and incorporate that part thereof known by the name of Jeremy Squam Island, as a town by the name of Westport, was read 1st & 2nd time and Monday next at 11' o'clock assigned for a 3d reading.
Resolve in favor of Jonathan McKenney, reported by the committee on the Judiciary, was read once and tomorrow at ten oclock assigned for a second reading.
On motion of Mr Evans of Gardiner, Ordered, that the committee on the Militia & military affairs be directed to inquire into the expediency of so far amending the law, as to provide that noncommissioned officers & privates may recover costs, when suits, commenced against them by Clerks of Companies for supposed forfeitures, are decided in favor of the defendants, & when it appears that the grounds of their defence [defense], had been offered in excuse to the commanding Officer, prior to the bringing of said suit. - read & passed. Sent up for concurrence.
