He was informed that the payment of the duty was indispensable during the existence of the law, but that the propriety of requiring a duty on an office of so little emolument was questionable, the subject would be submitted to the consideration of the Legislature. On motion of Mr Shapleigh of Berwick, Ordered, That Messrs Shapleigh of Berwick, Megray of Unity, & Smith of Newburgh be a committee with such as the Senate may join to enquire what alteration is necessary in the Law authorizing towns to build Houses of Correction &c - read & passed. Sent up for concurrence.

On motion of Mr Boutelle of Waterville, Ordered, That the Committee on the Judiciary be instructed to inquire into the expediency of altering amending or repealing the 1st 3d & 4th sections of an Act entitled "An act additional to an act regulating Judicial process & proceedings passed on the 8th day of March 1826. read & passed. Sent up for concurrence.

On motion of Mr Clark of Hallowell, Ordered, That the joint standing Committee on the Judiciary be directed to inquire into the expediency of providing by law for the probate of Wills, administration of estates and settlement of accounts & regulating the trusts of executors, administrators, and guardians in cases where the respective Judges of Probate of any County have been appointed, or shall hereafter be designated for such trusts - read & passed. Sent up for concurrence.
