to Daniel Goodenow Esq for the prompt, able & impartial manner in which he has discharged the arduous & complicated duties devolving on the Chair; that in closing his official duties to return to his friends & constituents he will please to accept their best wishes for his health & happiness - and thereupon, Mr. Speaker replied as follows, Gentlemen: I tender to you my grateful acknowledgements for the expression of your approbation of my conduct, as presiding officer of this House, contained in the order offered by the respected Gentleman from Pittston. Assembled as we have been, in a season of great political excitement, with various & opposite views & feelings, it was not reasonable to expect, that I should be able to discharge the duties assigned me in a manner perfectly satisfactory to all. My conscience acquits me of intentional error. It is true, as has been remarked, we are about to separate, probably some of us to meet no more. Let us not separate as conflicting politicians, but as men & brethren, originating from the same common Parent, possessing alike capacities to enjoy & suffer and destined to the same end. Let us not hope for too much from this world. It is but an introductory scene of existence, and the future will in all probability be as the past has been, a checkered scene of pleasure and of pain. Neither let us despair. If ever the time shall come, when even friendship shall deem it prudent to desert us, let us seek refuge in the precepts and examples of Him, whose law is love, and who taught us to remember injuries only to forget them. Adieu, my fellow citizens, and may the blessings of Heaven rest upon each one of you, and upon your families forever.
