A message was received from the Senate by their Secretary informing the House that the Senate have appointed Mr Porter to fill the several vacancies on the Joint Standing Committees by the death of Mr Pike

On motion of Mr Robinson of Augusta Ordered, that Messrs Robinson of Augusta, Fernald of Saco, and Cole of Greenwood be a Committee to enquire into the expediency of enacting a law making it a duty of the Selectmen of Towns and the Assessors of Plantations to enforce the laws relating to the sale of ardent Spirits, with leave to report by bill or otherwise.

On motion of Mr Kent Ordered, that the Committee on the Judiciary be instructed to enquire into the expediency of amending the law in relation to costs in criminal cases so that the Court of County Commissioners may allow fees to Justices of the Peace in cases where the person accused is acquitted by Justice sent up for concurrence.

On motion of Mr Carey Ordered that the Committee on State Lands be instructed to enquire into the expediency of making further appropriation to finish the Baring and Houlton Road sent up for concurrence.

On motion of Mr O'Brien Ordered that the Committee on Public Buildings be instructed to enquire into the expediency of removing from the Representatives Hall, the back or East row of Desks and seats of members, with leave to report by bill or otherwise - sent up for concurrence On
