fight--somewhere in this vicinity.

I am aware that many reports etc are due your office, which shall be sent as soon as we can get at our papers. I can only add at this brief halt, and on the bit of paper accidentally found, that this Regt. has been engaged in three battles within as many weeks. One was in Virginia one in Penna. and one in Maryland, in all of which we have received special commendation, as I will soon more particularly inform you.

At Middleburg Va. near Ashby's Gap we lost 1 killed and 7 wounded--at Gettysburg 30 killed 100 wounded and six missing probably prisoners taken on the skirmish line --at Jones' cross roads, on the Sharpsburg and Hagerstown pike, where I had command of our advance, we had a fight in which we lost 8 killed, wounded and missing--this was July 10th day before yesterday. For our conduct at Gettysburg, I have rec'd the particular and personal thanks of Brigade and Division and Corps commanders. We held the extreme left of our line when the most vicious attack was made.
