11 proposing a Convention of both branches of the Legislature in the Representatives Chamber forthwith for the purpose of qualifying the Governor elect which message was delivered accordingly by the Secretary.

A message was received from the House of Representatives concurring in the foregoing proposition.

In Convention. Agreeably to assignment the two branches of the Legislature met in Convention in the Representatives Chamber, when Samuel E. Smith Esq. came in attended by the Council and the Sheriff of Kennebec County, and before the President of the Senate and in presence of both Houses of the Legislature took and subscribed the oaths required by the Constitution to qualify him to enter upon the discharge of his official duties.

The Secretary of State then made proclamation that Samuel E. Smith is Governor of the State of Maine for the current political year and to be respected and obeyed as such.

The Governor and Council then withdraw and the Convention seperated.

In Senate. The Secretary of State came in and laid on the table a written message from the Governor, accompanied by sundry Documents, which was read and ordered to lie on the table.

On motion, Ordered, that the reading of the Documents be dispensed with.
