It becomes my duty to inform the two Branches of the Legislature that a vacancy now exists in the office of Major General of the second Division of the Militia of this State, occasioned by the resignation of Major General Alfred Marshall. Ether Shepley, one of our Senators in Congress, covering a communication from the Secretary of War of the United States to the Senators and Representatives in Congress from this State, in relation to the survey of a route for a Rail Road from some point on the Seaboard in this State to the Canada border, in the direction of Quebec.
