Augusta, Feb. 1, 1881 The Committee on Insane Hospital met at 230 P.M. in Room No. Six at the State House, and were called to order by the Chairman on the part of the House, Mr. Morrill, who said:

There is now an opportunity for persons who are interested in the affairs of the Insane Hospital which has been invited wholly by the trustees. We want for any one who is interested. I can only say as Chairman that I have no particular witnesses to introduce, and now want for such as may come forward.

Rev. Dr. Nathaniel Butler of Hallowell: Mr. Chairman: I have conferred privately with the Chairmen, both on the part of the Senate and House, and have requested to be allowed to examine witnesses here in this investigation of the hospital. I would be glad if the committee should see fit to grant that request. I do this because it is a matter that has been one of study and observation by me for three or four years past.
