Mr Wm Carleton [William Carleton] Sir Yours of 9th June enclosing Five Dollars in part for Mr Erwins taxes for this year was used in due term, + I meant to answer immediately, but being very much engaged laid it by for the + forgot it till now.

[something stricken] To your question whether the Highway Taxes could not be worked out for less than the amount, I answer that as you send the money so promptly, I will do it twenty per cent discount. --

We have had two additional Highway Taxes to raise since I wrote you last, of which Mr Erwins part is 49 ct + 2.38 cents + we have abated an additional school tax -- therefore the account of taxes for his this year now stands thus --

+ 9.01 As the amount is over five Dollars + not easy to remit change by letter, you may if you please send six Dollars, which will make 53 cents for my trouble.
