Williamsburgh 31st May 1824 Mr William Carleton Sir I have received your letter of 27th inst enclosing thirty four Dollars in full for the taxes + charges of sale on the land of John Erwins Esq in this term + also for my trouble in the business, for which I have given a receipt to the mail carrier so that you may safely send him his rect to you, by mail. Agreeably to my understanding with your brother the deed from the Collector has been kept back + is now rendered unnecessary so that the business stands as if no sale had been made, + this letter may be sufficient evidence that is is [stricken] the taxes + changes are [inserted] discharged --

The taxes for this year are not yet assessed, when they are I will let you know the amount + as I am Treasurer of the town my receipt to you for the amount when it shall arrive will be a sufficient discharge --

Respectfully your obt svt M-G.
