The Regiment is in good health & spirits & has won the high respect & esteem of those whose opinion is of value in the Army.
Col. Gilmore & Major Spear are performing their duty with great faithfulness & credit. I learn that our conscripts are to be here by the 25th inst. & I trust we can manage them with enough skill & prudence to save them from desertion & its inevitable consequence -- shooting. I don't want any of that business with Maine men. I obtained the release of those men of the 2d Maine against whom charges had been preferred for mutiny, & they are on duty, & are good soldiers.
