74 Gains Mills, Buttons Bridge & Cold Harbor

We lay near Gains Mills untill near night, then marched about three miles in the direction of Buttons Bridge and camped for the night. The rebs threw some shells acrost the river but did no damage. One was a 64 lb shell.

8th A fair day. A detale of 100 men from our regt went on picket. Our men met the rebs over about eight rods apart and both sides agreed was to fire on each other. The regt that was in our front a year ago at US ford is on our front today, and is the 4th Va Cavelry. The rebs threw a shell now and then and some them came near brigade headquarters. Gen Grant is probably preparing to see Richmond and the inhabitants say that it's ours sure.

Soon after came the battle of Cold Harbor the date of which I have lost together with all date untill the 14th inst on the south of James River.
