City Point Va: Col Chamberlain wounded 75

Days and nights rolled by with thair usual hardships and privations, but without many casualties in our regt until after we crossed the James River, near City Point Va.

June 17th We moved up from near the James river and comfort within three miles of Petersburg

18th We advanced towards the town while thair was verry hard fighting in front. We halted in a field where the dead men lay scatered thick all over the ground at the rate of one to each squair rod. The union men and confederates mixed all together where they had charged [?] detirmined to hold the little marks that the rebs had thrown up for protection. Our Col J L Chamberlin was wounded with a minnie ball threw the hips while commanding the 1st Brigade in the 1st Division of the 5th Corps. It was reported that the wound would prove fatal.
