76 J.L. Chamberlain a General

Col Chamberlin was promoted to brigadier general by Gen Grant upon the field. In the afternoon we advanced threw a piece of woods and built brestworks.

19th A fair day. We lay in the same place picket fireing and shelling all day. The 16th, 20th, 31st, 32d Maine infantry, and the 2d and 7th Maine batterys wer within half a mile of each other. The 1st Me Heavy Artillery is within a mile of us. A detale of 125 men went on picket at dark from our regt

20th A fair day. Sargt Storer was wounded in the leg. Our pickets came in at dark and we moved about a half a mile and stoped till morning. Shelling continualy but little damage done.

21st A fair day. We moved to the left of the line and threw up brestworks. I saw some of the 1st Me Cavelry and they told me the regt was on a ride and had been gone ten days. They told me that Prentis was taken prisoner.
