Apr I went down town and staid untill 10'oclock. Saw Col Gilmore [Charles D Gilmore] and Genl Hardee [William Joseph Hardee].
14th A fair day. I staid at the hospital all day, and read a book that I took out of the library.
15th A rainy day. President Lincoln was shot in the head, while at Fords Theatre last evening. Cavelry guards are posted in every street corner with orders to arrest every suspicious caricter. A sadled horse was found early this morning very sweaty. The man that committed the deed was recognised as John Wilks Booth [John Wilkes Booth], and has been a [?] actor in this city. At 8.30 oclock P.M. Mr. Lincoln acompanied by Mrs Lincoln, Miss Harris, and Maj Rathburn entered the theater, at 10.30 oclock he was assasinated, but lived untill 7:22 the next morning. The secretary of state (Seward) was sick in his room and was asaulted about the same time by unknown ruffian rushing by his servant claiming to have a message for him. He suceeded in cutting the secretary severely but had to escape when asaulted by his servant.
16th Many suspicious persons have been arrested but it is unsertan as to the right one.
17th Every thing looks gloomy since the death of the president. Many stories about the affair.
