Duties -- inspect the concerns of the prison, the manner of keeping books and accounts; annually audit, correct and settle accounts of warden and the State for the end of the year; inquire into improper conduct committed by warden or other officers; examine disorderly conduct of prisoners; make rules and regulations deemed nec-essary for the operation of the prison.

Duties -- conduct religious services in the chapel every Sunday; visit the sick; labor diligently and faithfully for the mental, moral and religious improvement of the convicts; and aid the convicts whenever practical in obtaining employment after discharge.

Additional information -- appointed by warden and prison inspectors (1841-1854); warden shall appoint all ordained clergyment of Thomaston to officiate as chap-lains at the prison on rotation (1854-1871); appointed by Governor on recommendation of warden and prison inspectors with approval of the Council (1871-1917); appointed by prison Commissioner (1917-1931); appointed by Department of Institutional Services (1931--).
