74 August 16 we was in camp to day.
August 17
we went on Picket guard this morning down to the river. our Pickets and the rebels Pickets are only abought 800 yards a part. They fire at our Pickets very often. General Carrol was wounded to day by the rebels. he went out beyond our Pickets and the rebels fired at him wounded him and wounded the Majors horse at the same fire our Division moved to day abought 7 miles back toards Culpeper.

August 18th The army has been falling back tards Culpeper today the rebels are advancing. our Ridgement is in the rear we are to be the rear guard. our horses has been saddled and bridled all day and all night.
August 19
The rear of the army has passed here this morning so now we are on the rear. we had to stop and stand Picket guard for abought 4 hours then we started on after the rest we came throught Culpeper at dark and come abought 12 miles this side and stoped till morning.
