To W E Towle

Sir

You are hereby authorized to proceed to townships letter F[?] & H[?] in the second range of townships west from the east line of the State and with suitable assistants proceed to measure all the timber cut by persons on that township during the last winter

In measuring the timber you will measure each tree seperately [separately] as it laid cut down carried off or destroyed estimating the contents in thousand feet board[?] measure including all which would be measured in the county of Penobscot in the usual manner with the usual deductions for rots & crooks.

You will also in all cases measure the length and diameters of the ton timber carried away that it may be ascertained clearly what amount there was on the whole – the most rigid exactness is necessary in this work in order to obtain correct information in relation to this matter.

You will make no allowance for axe [?] except to square bust[?] the tree but measure over all from the square of the bust[?] to the end of the top log. then divide into logs as the usual manner and then make the requisite allowance on each log and keep each log seperately [separately] and each tree also seperate [separate]

You will also ascertain if possible by whom the timber was cute and stolen in order that the trespass may be legally[?] established and you will make a return
