Biographical information I left Buffalo at the end of my Freshman year at college. After that we travelled a great deal, including a thirteen-month trip to the Near East which at that time was largely unspoiled and everywhere friendly to Americans. At that time we did no flying but went by boat and train. We saw the last of the Empires: the Dutch held Java; we made our presence felt in the Philippines; the British held Hong Kong, Singapore and the Malay states. And the European influence is strong in China. But any currents of ill-will did not appear on the surface. After that trip we took many shorter ones on the mid European
