There is very low certainty that high concentrations of ferritin provide a sensitive test for iron overload in people where this condition is suspected. There is insufficient evidence to know whether ferritin concentration performs similarly when screening asymptomatic people for iron deficiency or overload.Synthetic microbial communities have the potential to enable new platforms for bioproduction of biofuels and biopharmaceuticals. However, using engineered communities is often assumed to be difficult because of anticipated challenges in establishing and controlling community composition. Cross-feeding between microbial auxotrophs has the potential to facilitate coculture growth and stability through a mutualistic ecological interaction. We assessed cross-feeding between 13 Escherichia coli amino acid auxotrophs paired with a leucine auxotroph of Bacillus megaterium. We developed a minimal medium capable of supporting the growth of both bacteria and used the media to study coculture growth of the 13 interspecies pairs of auxotrophs in batch and continuous culture, as well as on semi-solid media. In batch culture, 8 of 13 pairs of auxotrophs were observed to grow in coculture. We developed a new metric to quantify the impact of cross-feeding on coculture growth. Six pairs also showed long-term stability in continuous culture, where coculture growth at different dilution rates highlighted differences in cross-feeding amongst the pairs. Finally, we found that cross-feeding-dependent growth on semi-solid media is highly stringent and enables identification of the most efficient pairs. These results demonstrate that cross-feeding is a viable approach for controlling community composition within diverse synthetic communities.
Pyrethroid long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have been important inthe large reductions in malaria cases in Africa, but insecticide resistance in Anopheles mosquitoes threatens their impact.Insecticide synergists may help control insecticide-resistant populations. Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) is such a synergist; it has been incorporated into pyrethroid-LLINs to form pyrethroid-PBO nets, which are currently produced by five LLIN manufacturers and, following a recommendation from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017, are being included in distribution campaigns. This review examines epidemiological and entomological evidence on the addition of PBO to pyrethroid netson their efficacy.
To compare effects of pyrethroid-PBO nets currently in commercial development or on the market with effects of their non-PBO equivalent in relation to 1. malaria parasite infection (prevalence or incidence); and 2. entomological outcomes.
We searched the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group (CIDG) Specialized Register, ials, and epidemiological data on pyrethroid-PBO nets for the full intended three-year life span of the nets is not available. Little evidence is available to support greater entomological efficacy of pyrethroid-PBO nets in areas where mosquitoes show lower levels of resistance to pyrethroids.Ovarian granulosa cell tumor (GCT) is a rare, low-grade malignant tumor that accounts for 70% of the sex cord-stromal tumors. It has two histopathologic types with different clinical and biologic features adult GCT and juvenile GCT. Most women diagnosed with the adult GCT have a favorable prognosis, with a 5-year survival rate of 97%-98%, but adult GCT has a feature of late relapse; the recurrence time could be more than 20 years after diagnosis. Juvenile GCT has a survival rate of 97% in stage I and a 5-year survival rate of 0%-22% in advanced stage with earlier recurrence than adult GCT. Consequently, the scenario emphasizes the need for early diagnosis, standardized treatment protocols, and long-term follow up. However, there is a lack of consensus regarding accurate diagnosis of GCT and adjuvant treatment. Furthermore, GCT tends to occur in young women, which emphasizes the viability of fertility-sparing surgery. The current review performed a systematic literature review of 60 articles to summarize the latest advances in GCT, with an emphasis on the molecular pathogenesis and survival after fertility-sparing surgery. We found that young women with fertility-sparing surgery had a desirable reproductive and survival outcome compared with those undergoing radical surgery.
The authors measured epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) during and after cancer treatment and its association with inflammation and fatigue, which is a debilitating symptom in patients with cancer.
Patients who had head and neck cancer without distant metastases were assessed before, immediately after, and at 6 months and 12 months postradiotherapy. Blood DNA methylation was assessed using a proprietary bead chip (the Illumina MethylationEPIC BeadChip). EAA was calculated using the Levine epigenetic clock (DNAmPhenoAge), adjusted for chronological age. Fatigue was assessed using the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20. Inflammatory markers were measured using standard techniques.
Most patients (N = 133) were men, White, had advanced disease, and received concurrent chemoradiation. EAA changes over time were significant, with the largest increase (4.9 years) observed immediately after radiotherapy (P < .001). Increased EAA was associated with elevated fatigue (P = .003) over time, and patients who hancreased EAA, especially immediately after treatment completion. EAA was associated with greater fatigue and inflammation, including 1 year after treatment. selleck chemicals llc Inflammation may be a target to reduce the impact of age acceleration on poor functional outcomes.
Despite the growing popularity of transnational education, there is a dearth of quantitative research regarding how transnational students experience higher education.
This comparative study sought to explore differences in educational experiences between transnational and onshore domestic students enrolled either at the Australian (domestic) or Singapore (transnational) campus of an Australian university.
An online survey gathered responses from 199 domestic students and 313 transnational students.
Results indicated transnational students to be significantly lower than domestic students on social and academic integration, institutional commitment, and satisfaction. No group differences were found in persistence intentions. A series of regression analyses showed integration and commitment significantly predicted student persistence intentions, across both cohorts, beyond demographic and course characteristics.
This study offers several recommendations for how universities can better foster integration and commitment in their transnational students, including better funding the development of student societies and providing realistic course previews and career advice to students upon entry into their courses.
