The taphonomic study, coupled with intra-site analysis, has unraveled the complex depositional history of el-Wad Terrace, enabling us to differentiate between cultural and non-cultural contexts and to identify possible human consumption of the European glass lizard and the large whip snake in the Natufian.Pathogenicity islands (PAIs) represent horizontally acquired chromosomal regions and encode their cognate integrase, which mediates chromosomal integration and excision of the island. These site-specific recombination reactions have to be tightly controlled to maintain genomic stability, and their directionality depends on accessory proteins. The integration host factor (IHF) and the factor for inversion stimulation (Fis) are often involved in recombinogenic complex formation and controlling the directionality of the recombination reaction. We investigated the role of the accessory host factors IHF and Fis in controlling the stability of six PAIs in uropathogenic Escherichia coli strain 536. By comparing the loss of individual PAIs in the presence or absence of IHF or Fis, we showed that IHF specifically stabilized PAI I536 and that in particular the IHFB subunit seems to be important for this function. We employed complex genetic studies to address the role of IHF in PAI I536-encoded integrase (IntI) expression. Based on different YFP-reporter constructs and electrophoretic mobility shift assays we demonstrated that IntI acts a strong repressor of its own synthesis, and that IHF binding to the intI promoter region reduces the probability of intI promoter activation. Our results extend the current knowledge of the role of IHF in controlling directionality of site specific recombination reactions and thus PAI stability.Cardiovascular diseases, especially idiopathic myocardial fibrosis, is one of the most significant causes of morbidity and mortality in captive great apes. This study compared the structure and morphology of 16 hearts from chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) which were either healthy or affected by myocardial fibrosis using X-ray microtomography. In four hearts, a single, hyperdense structure was detected within the right fibrous trigone of the cardiac skeleton. High resolution scans and histopathology revealed trabecular bones in two cases, hyaline cartilage in another case and a focus of mineralised fibro-cartilaginous metaplasia with endochondral ossification in the last case. Four other animals presented with multiple foci of ectopic calcification within the walls of the great vessels. All hearts affected by marked myocardial fibrosis presented with bone or cartilage formation, and increased collagen levels in tissues adjacent to the bone/cartilage, while unaffected hearts did not present with os cordis or cartilago cordis. The presence of an os cordis has been described in some ruminants, camelids, and otters, but never in great apes. This novel research indicates that an os cordis and cartilago cordis is present in some chimpanzees, particularly those affected by myocardial fibrosis, and could influence the risk of cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death.A unified mathematical equation that combines two different boundary-layer flows of viscous and incompressible Ostwald-de Waele fluid is derived and studied. The motion of the mainstream and the wedge is approximated in the power-law manner, i.e, in terms of the power of the distance from the leading boundary-layer edge. It is also considered that the wedge can move in the same and opposite direction to that of the mainstream. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into the nonlinear ordinary differential equation using a new set of similarity variables. This transformed equation subjected to the boundary conditions describing the flow is then solved using the Chebyshev collocation method. Further, these numerical results are then validated by determining the flow behaviour at far-field by performing asymptotics. The velocity ratio parameter effectively captures and distinguishes two boundary-layer flows. The boundary layer thickness for shear-thinning fluid is thinner compared to corresponding parameters for shear-thickening fluids and is markedly separated by the Newtonian fluid. find more Further, the boundary-layer flow of the non-Newtonian fluid predicts an infinite viscosity for shear-thinning fluid quite away from the surface. The hydrodynamics of the obtained results is explained thoroughly.2D layered germanium selenide (GeSe) with p-type conductivity is incorporated with asymmetric contact electrode of chromium/Gold (Cr/Au) and Palladium/Gold (Pd/Au) to design a self-biased, high speed and an efficient photodetector. The photoresponse under photovoltaic effect is investigated for the wavelengths of light (i.e. ~220, ~530 and ~850 nm). The device exhibited promising figures of merit required for efficient photodetection, specifically the Schottky barrier diode is highly sensitive to NIR light irradiation at zero voltage with good reproducibility, which is promising for the emergency application of fire detection and night vision. The high responsivity, detectivity, normalized photocurrent to dark current ratio (NPDR), noise equivalent power (NEP) and response time for illumination of light (~850 nm) are calculated to be 280 mA/W, 4.1 × 109 Jones, 3 × 107 W-1, 9.1 × 10-12 WHz-1/2 and 69 ms respectively. The obtained results suggested that p-GeSe is a novel candidate for SBD optoelectronics-based technologies. The exome contains many obscure regions difficult to explore with current short-read sequencing methods. Repetitious genomic regions prevent the unique alignment of reads, which is essential for the identification of clinically-relevant genetic variants. Long-read technologies attempt to resolve multiple-mapping regions, but they still produce many sequencing errors. Thus, a new approach is required to enlighten the obscure regions of the genome and rescue variants that would be otherwise neglected. This work aims to improve the alignment of multiple-mapping reads through the extension of the standard DNA fragment size. As Illumina can sequence fragments up to 550 bp, we tested different DNA fragment lengths using four major commercial WES platforms and found that longer DNA fragments achieved a higher genotypability. This metric, which indicates base calling calculated by combining depth of coverage with the confidence of read alignment, increased from hundreds to thousands of genes, including several associated with clinical phenotypes.
