The data consolidate prior evidence for the actions of GDNF as a regulator of PV+ cell development in the cortex and demonstrate functional effects upon network excitability via modulation of functional GABAergic signalling and under epileptic challenge.Both hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) extracted microvesicles (MVs) are potent anti-inflammatory molecules. They play an essential role in lowering the production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). The latter could strongly stimulate MiR-155 that contributes to neurodegeneration and Alzheimer's disease (AD). miR-155 could repress the expression of inositol 5-phosphatase-1 (SHIP-1) leading eventually to activation of Akt kinase and neurofibrillary development in AD. The current study was conducted to evaluate the role of miR-155 in a rat model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced AD and to investigate the effect of using MVs and H2 S that were given either separately or combined in regulating pro-inflammatory signaling. Thirty female Wistar albino rats aged 6 months to 1 year were equally divided into five groups; control group, LPS-induced AD group, LPS + MVs group, LPS + NaHS group, and LPS + MVs and NaHS group. The increased miR-155 level was associated with decreased SHIP-1 level and positively correlated with TNF-α. In addition, treatment with MVs and/or NaHS resulted in attenuation of inflammation, decreasing miR-155, pAkt levels, and downregulation of apoptosis along with improvement of the hippocampal and cortical histopathological alterations. LPS enhanced production of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels indicating oxidative stress-induced neural damage, whereas MVs and NaHS could mitigate oxidative damage and accelerate antioxidant capacity via increasing catalase enzyme. In conclusion, downregulation of TNF-α, miR-155, and pAkt and increased SHIP-1 could improve the neuro-inflammatory state and cognitive function of LPS-induced Alzheimer's disease.Correlations between early- and late-life performance are a major prediction of life-history theory. Negative early-late correlations can emerge because biological processes are optimized for early but not late life (e.g., rapid development may accelerate the onset of senescence; "developmental theory of aging") or because allocation to early-life performance comes at a cost in terms of late-life performance (as in the disposable soma theory). But variation in genetic and environmental challenges that each individual has to cope with during early life may also lead to positive early-late life-history trait correlations (the "fixed heterogeneity" or "individual quality" hypothesis). We analyzed individual life-history trajectories of 7,420 known-age female southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) monitored over 36 yr to determine how actuarial senescence (a proxy for late-life performance) correlate with age at first reproduction (a proxy for early-life performance). As some breeding events may not be detected in this field study, we used a custom "multievent" hierarchical model to estimate the age at first reproduction and correlate it to other life-history traits. The probability of first reproduction was 0.34 at age 3, with most females breeding for the first time at age 4, and comparatively few at older ages. Females with an early age of first reproduction outperformed delayed breeders in all aspects we considered (survival, rate of senescence, net reproductive output) but one early breeders appeared to have an onset of actuarial senescence 1 yr earlier compared to late breeders. Genetics and environmental conditions during early life likely explain the positive correlation between early- and late-life performance. The three species of Pareas snakes (Squamata Pareidae) in Taiwan, which form partially sympatric distribution on the island, provide a potential case to test the hypothesis of niche partitioning and character displacement with regard to dentition asymmetry and specialisation in feeding behaviour. In this study, behavioural experiments confirmed that P. formosensis feeds exclusively on slugs, whereas P. atayal and P. komaii consumed both. However, P. atayal more efficiently preys on land snails than P. komaii, exhibiting a shorter handling time and fewer mandibular retractions. Micro-CT and ancestral character reconstruction demonstrated the lowest asymmetry in P. formosensis (the slug specialist), the highest dentition asymmetry in P. atayal (the land snail specialist) and flexibility in P. komaii (the niche switcher) increased dentition asymmetry when sympatrically distributed with the slug eater (character displacement), and decreased asymmetry when living alone (ecological niche release). Ecological niche modelling showed that the distribution of P. formosensis is associated with the presence of slugs, while that of P. atayal could be explained by the land snails. Combining the results from morphology, phylogeny, behavioural experiments and ecological niche modelling, we showed that competition in the sympatric region might have facilitated character displacement among congeners, while the absence of competition in allopatric region has led to ecological niche release.
