The preparedness of healthcare institutes for the foreseen changes expected to arise through the implementation of E-Health is a significant turning point in determining its success. This should be evaluated through the awareness and readiness of healthcare workers to adopt E-Health technology to reduce health information technology failures.

This study investigated the relationship between the perceived attributes of innovation and E-Health adoption decisions of healthcare workers as part of a preimplementation process. Using a cross-sectional quantitative approach, the dimensions of the diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory were used to assess the E-Health readiness of 110 healthcare workers in a Mauritian specialized hospital.

A strong inclination towards E-Health adoption was observed, where the prime stimulators were perceived as modernization of healthcare management (84.1%, ẋ=4.19), increased work efficiency through reduction of duplication (77.6%, ẋ=4.10) and faster generation of results (71.1%, he first study of its kind in Mauritius to successfully characterize each adopter's profile and demonstrate the applicability of the DOI framework to predict the diffusion rate of E-Health platforms, while also highlighting the importance of identifying key opinion leaders who can be primed by innovators regarding the benefits of E-Health platforms, thus ensuring non-disruptive evolutionary innovation in the Mauritian healthcare sector. In many non-mammalian organisms, a population of germ-line stem cells supports continuing production of gametes during most or all the life of the individual, and germ-line stem cells are also present and functional in male mammals. Traditionally, however, they have been thought not to exist in female mammals, who instead generate all their germ cells during fetal life. Over the last several years, this dogma has been challenged by several reports, while supported by others. We describe and compare these conflicting studies with the aim of understanding how they came to opposing conclusions. We first consider studies that, by examining marker-gene expression, the fate of genetically marked cells, and consequences of depleting the oocyte population, addressed whether ovaries of post-natal females contain oogonial stem cells (OSC) that give rise to new oocytes. We next discuss whether ovaries contain cells that, even if inactive under physiological conditions, nonetheless possess OSC properties that can be revealed through cell-culture. We then examine studies of whether cells harvested after long-term culture of cells obtained from ovaries can, following transplantation into ovaries of recipient females, give rise to oocytes and offspring. Finally, we note studies where somatic cells have been re-programmed to acquire a female germ-cell fate. We conclude that the weight of evidence strongly supports the traditional interpretation that germ-line stem cells do not exist post-natally in female mammals. However, the ability to generate germ cells from somatic cells in vitro establishes a method to generate new gametes from cells of post-natal mammalian females.Copy number variation has been identified as a major source of genomic variation associated with disease susceptibility. With the advent of whole-exome sequencing (WES) technology, massive WES data have been generated, allowing for the identification of copy number variants (CNVs) in the protein-coding regions with direct functional interpretation. We have previously shown evidence of the genomic correlation structure in array data and developed a novel chromosomal breakpoint detection algorithm, LDcnv, which showed significantly improved detection power through integrating the correlation structure in a systematic modeling manner. However, it remains unexplored whether the genomic correlation exists in WES data and how such correlation structure integration can improve the CNV detection accuracy. In this study, we first explored the correlation structure of the WES data using the 1000 Genomes Project data. Both real raw read depth and median-normalized data showed strong evidence of the correlation structure. Motivated by this fact, we proposed a correlation-based method, CORRseq, as a novel release of the LDcnv algorithm in profiling WES data. The performance of CORRseq was evaluated in extensive simulation studies and real data analysis from the 1000 Genomes Project. CORRseq outperformed the existing methods in detecting medium and large CNVs. In conclusion, it would be more advantageous to model genomic correlation structure in detecting relatively long CNVs. selleck chemicals This study provides great insights for methodology development of CNV detection with NGS data.Yeast is a suitable model system to analyze the mechanism of lifespan. In this study, to identify novel factors involved in chronological lifespan, we isolated a mutant with a long chronological lifespan and found a missense mutation in the sur2+ gene, which encodes a homolog of Saccharomyces cerevisiae sphingolipid C4-hydroxylase in fission yeast. Characterization of the mutant revealed that loss of sur2 function resulted in an extended chronological lifespan. The effect of caloric restriction, a well-known signal for extending lifespan, is thought to be dependent on the sur2+ gene.

Computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous biopsies are used to guide treatment in vertebral osteomyelitis and spinal malignancy, but the efficacy of this study remains unclear.

To investigate the performance of CT-guided spinal biopsy, and factors that may influence its success.

Retrospective study of all consecutive patients who underwent a CT-guided spine biopsy at a UK teaching hospital between April 2012 and February 2019. Biopsies were performed by 3 consultant neuroradiologists for a lesion suggestive of either malignancy or infection. Data collection included patient factors, biopsy factors, further investigations required, and diagnosis. Data were analyzed using contingency tables, analysis of variance, unpaired t-test, chi-squared test, and Fisher's exact test.

A total of 124 percutaneous biopsies were performed on 109 patients with a mean follow-up of 34.5 mo (range 4-86 mo) and a mean age of 66 yr (range 27-93). Approximately 32.3% (n=40) of the biopsies investigated possible infection, and 67.
