Studies on the application of exome sequencing in the diagnosis of leukodystrophies are emerging. We used targeted gene panel sequencing of 6440 genes to investigate the genetic etiology in a cohort of 50 children with neuroimaging diagnosis of leukodystrophy/genetic leukoencephalopathy of unknown etiology. These 50 patients without a definite biochemical or genetic diagnosis were derived from a cohort of 88 patients seen during a 2.5-year period (2015 January-2017 June). Patients who had diagnosis by biochemical or biopsy confirmation (n = 17) and patients with incomplete data or lack of follow-up (n = 21) were excluded. The aim of this study is to select salt-tolerant traditional rice resources collected from Lei-Qiong area of South China and investigate their physiological performances and biochemical regulations during salt stress response, together with two well-known international varieties, Nona Bokra (salt-tolerant sample) and IR29 (salt-sensitive sample). After comprehensive analyses, we discovered that two Lei-Qiong traditional salt-tolerant rice samples showed less growth inhibition by salt stress during both germination and seedling stage, in comparison with other rice samples. Moreover, there were less chlorosis symptoms in these two kinds of salt tolerant rice under salt stress, corresponding to their better water-holding capacity. We measured malondialdehyde and proline contents, and activities of CAT and POD of seedlings treated with 100 mM NaCl for 5 dand 10 d, respectively. Interestingly, less cellular membrane damage and stronger antioxidant enzyme system were found in the two Lei-Qiong rice samples. Our study suggests that traditional rice landrace growing onshore of Lei-Qiong area in China possesses good salt-tolerant capacity, which could be attributed to their efficient antioxidant enzyme system.Background Despite recognition of the benefits of post-school education in improving life outcomes for autistic adults their university completion rates remain low.Aim To explore the experiences of undergraduate autistic university students participating in specialist peer mentoring (SPM) to identify active ingredients in the peer mentoring process and to examine the impact of SPM on social communication.Material and method A total of 30 (8 female; M age = 22.3; SD = 6.7) undergraduate autistic university students engaged in SPM participated in this study. A quantitative pre-test post-test design examined changes in autistic traits. In parallel, the experiences of participating in SPM were explored through semi-structured interviews.Results Improvements were noted at post-test on the Social Responsiveness Scale-2 total score p = 0.02), and its Social Communication, (p = 0.03) and Social Motivation (p = 0.03) sub-scales. Four themes emerged from the interviews Developing Partnership and Understanding, Modelling and Practising Communication, Psychological Support and Grading and Planning Skills.Conclusions These results indicated that the mentor-mentee partnership was a crucial active ingredient of SPM. This partnership appeared to modify social cognition and motivation for autistic university students through modelling and practising communication.Significance These results demonstrate that SPM can support participation at university for autistic university students.The laboratory is a vital part of the continuum of patient care. Besides, handgrip strength (HGS) is an early indicator to detect frailty and muscle weakness in systemic reviews.Method Our study involved 2258 males from NHANES datasets (2011-2012, who were divided into quartiles by urine flow rate (UFR), which was measured by uroflowmetry. Multivariate regression models were performed to analyze the associations between UFR and HGS.Results The UFR had a positive correlation to the HGS by multivariate regression models in males (β coefficient 1.348, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.530, 2.166, p = 0.001). The male participants with the highest quartile of UFR have a greater HGS than those with lowest quartile of UFR (β coefficient 4.546, 95% CI 2.462, 6.630, p less then 0.001).
