Marine litter is one of the most significant marine environmental pollutants in coastal destinations around the world. Tourists' improper behavior in disposing of litter is a major contributor. The formation of tourists' environmentally responsible behavior (ERB) has thus become important in preventing and mitigating marine litter problems. This study aims to investigate factors affecting tourists' ERB using the extended theory of planned behavior (TPB). A questionnaire survey was conducted on Libong Island, Thailand between December 2019 and March 2020. A total of 876 respondents were surveyed. The empirical findings show that extended TPB with environmental awareness and environmental background can explain tourists' ERB. Recommendations for the formation of coastal tourists' ERB include (i) raising public awareness; (ii) promoting government administration; and (iii) elevating the quality of coastal attractions.The aim of this study is to characterize the background noise and abiotic and anthropogenic sound sources in the sector with greater anthropogenic use of the Cananéia estuary. The results show that the relative amplitude of background noise decreased with the increase of frequency range, and was higher with greater number of vessels, wind speed and during flood tide. Weekends and vacation periods were shown to be important dates during which background noise increased in the region. The influence of the tide and the wind speed on the relative amplitude was dependent on the frequency range analyzed. Therefore, both abiotic and anthropogenic sound sources were observed to be important factors regarding an increase in background noise in Cananéia. The importance of the continuity of vessel regulation in the region and of future studies that identify whether such noises alter parameters from the sound repertoire of the cetacean species in the region.Low field NMR is an inexpensive and low footprint technique to obtain physical, chemical, electronic and structural information on small molecules, but suffers from poor spectral dispersion, especially when applied to the analysis of mixtures. Subspectral editing employing optimal control pulses is a suitable approach to cope with the severe signal superpositions in complex mixture spectra at low field. In this contribution, the use of optimal control pulses is demonstrated to be feasible at a field strength as low as 0.5 T. The optimal control pulse shapes were calculated using the Krotov algorithm. Downsizing the complexity of the algorithm from exponential to polynomial is shown to be possible by using a system approach with each system corresponding to a (small) molecule. In this way compound selective excitation pulses can be calculated. The signals of substructures of the cyclopentenone molecule were excited using optimal control pulses calculated by the Krotov algorithm demonstrating the feasibility of subspectral editing. Likewise, for a mixture of benzoic acid and alanine, editing of the signals of either benzoic acid or alanine employing optimal control pulses was shown to be possible. The obtained results are very promising and can be extended to the targeted analysis of complex mixtures such as biofluids or metabolic samples at low field strengths opening access for benchtop NMR to point of care settings.Betaine is an osmolyte with the potential to increase volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production and hence improve intestinal health.The present study investigated how betaine affects portal and arterial concentrations and net portal absorption (NPA) of VFA in growing Iberian pigs. Eight 30 kg BW Iberian growing barrows with indwelling catheters in portal vein, ileal vein and carotid artery were randomly assigned to a control diet or a diet supplemented with 0.5% betaine. Para-aminohippuric acid was infused into the ileal vein as a marker to determine portal blood flow using the dilution method. Blood samples were simultaneously taken from the carotid artery and portal vein at -60, 60, 120, 180, 240, 300 and 360 min after feeding 1 200 g of the diet. The NPA of VFA (acetate, propionate, butyrate, valerate, isobutyrate and caproate) was determined by multiplying the porto-arterial plasma concentration differences by portal plasma flow. Betaine increased NPA of acetate (1.44 fold; P  less then  0.001) and total VFA (0.55 fold; P  less then  0.001) while decreased NPA of propionate (-0.38 fold; P  less then  0.05) and valerate (-1.46 fold; P  less then  0.05) compared with control pigs. Estimated heat production potentially derived from NPA of VFA accounted for 0.20-0.27 of metabolizable energy for maintenance. Acetate and propionate accounted for most of the total VFA estimated heat production (0.83-0.89). Regarding bacterial communities, betaine apparently did not change the DNA abundance of fecal total bacteria, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterobacteriaceae, Bacteroides and the Clostridium clusters I, IV and XIV. In conclusion, betaine increased portal appearance and NPA of VFA, contributing to cover maintenance energy requirements.An accurate value for metabolizable energy (ME) requirement for maintenance (MEm) is essential to enable sheep husbandry practice to reach its potential. The objectives of the study were to use calorimetry chamber data of dry ewes (Hu × thin-tail Han F1 crossbred) to develop updated MEm, examine effects of substituting concentrate feed with lucerne hay on energy partitioning, and explore the relationships between energy utilization and fasting heat production (FHP). Data were collected from three experiments. In Exps. 1, 2a and 2b, lucerne hay was used to replace concentrates in three levels (040%, 1525% and 3010%), with diets containing 60% maize stover (Exp. 1), fresh rye forage (Exp. selleck chemical 2a) or dry rye forage (Exp. 2b). Within each experiment, diets were isoenergetic (digestible energy, DE) and isonitrogenous. Exp. 3 aimed at evaluating effects of three BW levels on nutrient utilization of dry ewes offered diets containing 60% maize stover, 15% lucerne hay and 25% concentrates. Energy metabolism data were measstimate MEm for dry ewes, and the selection of low FHP ewes for breeding has the potential to improve sheep production efficiency.
