Olfactory dysfunction, a reduced or complete loss of the ability to smell, is gaining attention because of its substantial impact on an individual's quality of life and the possibility that it is an important sign of underlying disease. However, olfactory dysfunction is underdiagnosed in the general population due to diagnostic difficulty and unpredictable prognosis. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of clinically diagnosed olfactory dysfunction in South Korea by using well-organized, nationwide, population-based cohort data, and the associations between olfactory dysfunction and risk of neurodegenerative disorders.
We investigated the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort for patients diagnosed with olfactory dysfunction according to the International Classification of Diseases. Annual and overall incidence and prevalence of olfactory dysfunction during 2003 to 2013 and patient characteristics were analyzed. Double hindfoot arthrodesis is a reliable treatment option in lower extremity deformity and arthritis. Single (medial) and 2-incision techniques have been described. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the extent of cartilage debrided in each approach and to evaluate the competency of the deltoid ligament.
Eight matched pairs of cadaveric specimens were acquired. One limb from each pair was randomly assigned to the single medial incision and the other to the 2-incision technique. Stress radiographs were obtained prior to dissection to evaluate for valgus tibiotalar tilt. The talonavicular and subtalar articular surfaces were denuded of cartilage and the joints disarticulated. The percentage of cartilage debrided was determined using ImageJ software. Postoperative tibiotalar tilt was measured with a technique and threshold previously described by our group. The intraclass correlation coefficient was calculated to determine inter- and intraobserver reliability.

Level III, retrospective cohort study.Metabolic adaptations in the brain are critical to the establishment and maintenance of normal cellular functions and to the pathological responses to disease processes. Here, we have focused on specific metabolic pathways that are involved in immune-mediated neuronal processes in brain using isolated neurons derived from human autopsy brain sections of normal individuals and individuals diagnosed as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Laser capture microscopy was used to select specific cell types in immune-stained thin brain sections followed by NanoString technology to identify and quantify differences in mRNA levels between age-matched control and AD neuronal samples. Comparisons were also made between neurons isolated from AD brain sections expressing pathogenic hyperphosphorylated AT8- positive (AT8+) tau and non-AT8+ AD neurons using double labeling techniques. The mRNA expression data showed unique patterns of metabolic pathway expression between the subtypes of captured neurons that involved membrane based solute transporters, redox factors, and arginine and methionine metabolic pathways. We also identified the expression levels of a novel metabolic gene, Radical-S-Adenosyl Domain1 (RSAD1) and its corresponding protein, Rsad1, that impact methionine usage and radical based reactions. Immunohistochemistry was used to identify specific protein expression levels and their cellular location in NeuN+ and AT8+ neurons. APOE4 vs APOE3 genotype-specific and sex-specific gene expression differences in these metabolic pathways were also observed when comparing neurons from individuals with AD to age-matched individuals.
Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based solutions are among the most commonly used bowel preparation regimens for colonoscopy. Although these solutions are well tolerated, rare adverse cardiac events have been reported.
We sought to identify the characteristics that may predispose patients to develop supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) after ingestion of GoLYTELY (PEG 3350 and electrolytes oral solution) in anticipation for their colonoscopy.
We performed a retrospective observational cohort study of the electronic medical record of all patients who developed SVT after ingestion of GoLYTELY solution from April 2012 to March 2019 at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center. Clinical data were obtained through review of medical records.
We identified 16 patients with new-onset SVT after ingestion of bowel preparation solution before undergoing the colonoscopy procedure. In all, 12 (75%) patients developed atrial fibrillation, 3 (18.8%) patients developed atrial tachycardia, and 1 patient (6.3%) developed atrial flul discharge, and transient electrolyte shifts at the cellular level led to the development of SVTs.
This study assessed the feasibility of unpaid social media advertising to recruit participants affected with an orofacial cleft (OFC) for a genetic study.
This is a retrospective analysis of recruitment based on enrollment and participation in a genetic study. Participants completed a series of enrollment surveys, provided saliva samples, and completed postparticipation feedback surveys.
Participants were eligible if they or a minor in their care were affected by an OFC, the affected participant was not adopted, and the mother of the affected individual had not taken antiseizure medication during pregnancy.
Success of recruitment was evaluated from the number of enrolled participants and sample return rate.
In the first 12 months of recruitment, 313 individuals completed initial screening surveys; of these, 306 participants were eligible. A total of 263 individuals completed all online surveys and were sent DNA sample kits. One hundred sixty-two subject DNA samples were returned within 12 months of cient and effective for recruiting participants for a genetic study in comparison to traditional clinic-based modes of recruitment.
