23%, P < .01) without significant differences in PES (28% vs 23%, P = .55), G-tube dependence (25% vs. 23%, P = .25), or TEP placement (42% vs. 59%, P = .09).

Despite MVFTT reconstruction after STL, G-tube dependence, PCF formation, and limitations of speaking rehabilitation (TEP) remain a significant issue. Modification of MVFTT inset may provide an opportunity to reduce PCF incidence without affecting other functional outcomes.

To assess the incidence of normal vision following anatomically successful macular hole surgery and associated clinical variables.

Multicentre, retrospective chart review. Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative clinical data were extracted from electronic medical records from seven European vitreoretinal units. Inclusion criteria were as follows eyes undergoing primary vitrectomy for idiopathic full-thickness macular hole from January 2015 to January 2018; postoperative macular hole closure confirmed by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT); preoperative pseudophakia or phakic eyes receiving combined cataract surgery; one-year follow-up. The primary outcome was 'normal vision' defined as a final best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ≥ 20/25. Univariate, multivariate and decision-tree analyses were conducted to evaluate the clinical variables associated with 'normal vision'. Odds ratios (OR) and confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated.

Of 327 eligible cases, 91 (27.8%) achieved 'normal vision' at 1year. Multivariate analysis identified variables significantly associated with 'normal vision' shorter symptom duration (odds ratio [OR]=1.05; 95% confidence interval [CI]1.02-1.09; p=0.002), smaller preoperative OCT minimum linear diameter (OR per 100-micron increase=1.65; 95%CI1.31-2.08; p<0.001) and better mean preoperative BCVA (OR=15.13; 95%CI 3.59-63.65; p<0.001). The decision-tree analysis found that the most significant variable associated with 'normal vision' was symptom duration. see more 'Normal vision' was achieved in 70.6% of eyes operated within one week from symptom onset and in 45% of eyes with symptom duration between 1 and 3weeks.

These findings suggested urgent surgery is justified for small macular holes of short duration.

Thermal regenerable redox-flow batteries (TRBs) are flow batteries that store energy in concentration cells that can be recharged by distillation at temperature less then 100 °C, exploiting low-temperature heat sources. Using a single membrane cell setup and a suitable redox couple (LiBr/Br2 ), a TRB has been developed that is able to store a maximum volumetric energy of 25.5 Wh dm-3 , which can be delivered at a power density of 8 W m-2 . After discharging 30 % of the volumetric energy, a total heat-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency of 4 % is calculated, the highest value reported so far in harvesting of low-temperature heat.

To evaluate the disease burden of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and to evaluate the risk factors of disability-adjusted life years (DALY) caused by AMD.

Country-specific DALY number, rate and age-standardized rate of AMD were acquired from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017 database. The Socio-demographic Index (SDI), Human Development Index (HDI), Inequality-adjusted Human Development Index (IA-HDI) and other related data were obtained from published data or shared databases. Regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the correlations between the potential risk factors and the age-standardized DALY rate of AMD.

The DALY number doubled from 1990 to 2017, and DALY rate increased from 4.73 (95% CI 3.19-6.54) to 6.95 (95% CI 4.76-9.54). However, change was small after standardizing. Females tended to have severer burden. Disability-adjusted life years (DALY) rates were correlated to annual PM2.5 concentration, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, population with at least some secondary education (secondary education), glaucoma prevalence and gross national income (GNI) per capita. In SDI model, glaucoma, GDP, healthcare access and quality index (HAQ) and secondary education were associated with disease burden (p<0.001). In IA-HDI model, cataract, glaucoma, PM2.5, GDP and secondary education were correlated to DALY rates (p<0.001). In model included four components of HDI, glaucoma, PM2.5, GDP, secondary education, expected years of schooling and life expectancy at birth were associated (p<0.001).

Being female, older age, poor socioeconomic status and less educated are associated with a heavier disease burden of AMD. These findings would provide a basic understanding for policy making on AMD prevention and treatment.

The in vitro anticoagulant activity of active anticoagulant fraction was comparable to commercial anticoagulants heparin and warfarin. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, and phytols in the active anticoagulant fraction, nevertheless; it was devoid of glycosides, triterpenoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, and carbohydrates. By gas chromatography with mass spectrometry analysis, decanoic acid, 1,2,3-propanetriyl ester (22.3%), dodecanoic acid, 1,2,3-propanetriyl ester-d5 (17.3%), dodecenoic acid, 1,2,3-propanetriyl ester (12.5%), and 4-B-methylandrostane 2,3-diol-1,17-dione (11.4%) were identified as the most abundant constituents of active anticoagulant fraction. Presence of αβ-fibrinogenase enzyme was identified by biochemical assay but not by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry analysis suggesting presence of a novel protease enzyme in this fraction.
