� 135 Apr I went down town and staid untill 10'oclock. Saw Col Gilmore [Charles D Gilmore] and Genl Hardee [William Joseph Hardee]. 14th A fair day. I staid at the hospital all day, and read a book that I took out of the library. 15th A rainy day. President Lincoln was shot in the head, while at Fords Theatre last evening. Cavelry guards are posted in every street corner with orders to arrest every suspicious caricter. A sadled horse was found early this morning verry swety. The man that comitted the deed was recognised as John Wilks Booth [John Wilkes Booth], and has been a fly actor in this city. At 8.30 oclock P.M. Mrs Lincoln acompanied by Mars Lincoln Miss Harris and Maj Rathburn entered the theater, at 10.30 oclock he was assisinated, but lived untill 7-22 the next morning. The secretary of state (Seward) was sick in his room and was asaulted about the same time by un known ruffin rushing by his servant claiming to have a mesage for him. He suceeded in cuting the secretary severely but had to escape when asaulted by his servant. 16th Many suspicious persons have been arres-ted but it is unsertan as to the right one. 17th Every thing looks gloomy since the death of the president.
