State of Maine

By William King

President of the Convention.

A Proclamation: [line underlined]

whereas his Excellency John Brooks, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, by his Proclamation of the twenty sixth day of February last, has recommended to the People of said Commonwealth to observe Thursday, the sixth day of April next, as a day of Fasting and Prayer. And Whereas Maine, then a part of that Commonwealth, has since become a separate and independent state: it is now, therefore, recommended to the good People of the State of Maine, in conformity with the ancient usage[?] of our[?] venerable forefathers, and in compliance with the aforesaid Proclamation of our late Chief Magistrate, to observe the same accordingly. Done at Portland, this sixteenth day of March, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty, and of the Independence of the United States the forty fourth
