Q. (cont.) and had fraudulently concealed them?
A. I have no recollection of any such thing as that. I think I would be likely to recollect it if it had been charged.
Q. Do you remember whether Mr. Chase signed the report of the committee of the council?
A. I should say he did, should say hi name was appended to it, Mr. Chase and I conversed a good deal about that report; the reports states a good many things that are not true and I drew up a report assailing it, but on the whole I thought we should not quarrel about the institution, we should get all the truth and I tore up that report and made a different one, without assailing that report, but stated the fact in reference to the money so far as Mr. Leighton was concerned. That committee reported what they called a defalcation $200 more than the records showed, they were mislead by looking at a printed paper instead of the records and accounts in manuscript. Mr chase and I had adminicle conversations in reference to the report, so far so far as I know he never expressed any dissatisfaction with the report as I made it.
Q. The Gov. and the council at that time had the supreme power of removal of the superintendent?
A. I think so
