A. We were.
Q. You made your visits in the nature of detective visits?
A. That was my intention.
Q. DId you talk with the attendants and with the patients going about through the different wards?
A. Yes I have been in company with Dr. Neal and Dr. Sanborn but as a rule went unattended.
Q. State the result of your observations with reference to the general treatment of the patients by the attendants?
A. My observation led me to believe as a general rule they were very humanely treated by the attendants. I think during the first year there was some little doubt in my mind in relation to one or two attendants to which I called to the superintendents attention, my suspicions were excited from my own observation.
Q. Had you seen instances of ill treatment of patients by them?
A. No sir, I thought perhaps they did not give quite as much time to the comfort and amusement of the patients as they were expected to. I never saw any violence but inattention.
Q. What was done with respect to those two attendants?
A. I called the attention of the superintendent, and he
