A. (cont.) accounts of the treasurer at the Insane Hospital in the fall of 1873, my memory as to that subject is very indistinct. I have no doubt that I wrote the report from the fact that it is in my handwriting, and I remember that during the discussion of the report, you favored sharper criticism than a majority of the committee. I have no recollection whatever as to the formal adoption of the report or of its being signed by the committee, but your name is subscribed to the report in my handwriting and I am satisfied that I affixed it as well as my own to the report, but I have no recollection of being authorized by you to sign your name, though I presume of course that at the time I did, as I supposed I had authority to do so. As the subject has since been dismissed from my mind, I cannot state that the supposition was based upon that general authority to sign each others names which we so frequently exercised in these days, or from an impression that as you favored a sharper report, you would of course approve the one in question, or from what reason. In any event I regret that any misapprehension in the matter has arisen, and if it is deemed desirable I am writing to appear before the committee and testify to what I have written in this letter.
