Augusta Nov. 11th 1820
Hon. William King
Governor of the State of Maine,
Sir,
I intimated to Judge Bridge before his departure for Boston a few weeks ago, that I had a desire to be appointed Secretary of the Board of Commissioners on the subject of a division of the Public Lands &c. He mentioned me favorably to the other members of the Board from Maine, and I am gratified to learn that they are disposed to meet my wishes. The subject was agitated at the late meeting in Boston, but as Mr Lewis had not arrived when the Board adjourned, no appointment was made. Only one other application has been made, and that by a gentleman from Boston in whom the Massachusetts members feel no particular interest. Mr Bridge thinks my success nearly certain, but has advised me to address a letter to you on the subject, and request that you would, if congenial to your feelings, write to Hon Mr Lincoln in my favor. I am aware that your attention must be constantly engrossed in business of a public nature, and that it is rather presumptuous in me to trouble you with matters which chiefly concern myself,
