Q.(cont.) up to the discharge of their duties.
A. I never observed any lack of vigilance, and supposed he was vigilant and competent in that department. he is a very quiet man and I think that is one of the excellences for that position. It would not do to have a noisey man in there skipping about and stirring up by nervousness the whole institution. I thought the superintendent had some most excellent qualifications or capacities for that department because he was so quiet. I think he saw a great deal more than many of those about him thought he saw.

A. I did, I used to very often go round, have been at meal times at some one or more of the dining rooms. I hardly suppose there is a family in our city that has better bread uniformly than bread I eat at the hospital. I think there was always enough. When I first became acquainted there I used to go out and see him feed the swine, and there were large quantities of olden bread carried out and I thought it was rather extravagant. I spoke to Dr. Harlow about it. I thought there was some wasted and the Dr. said that you could not feed them as you could feed at private boarding houses, he said if he did not give them all they would eat and have something
