DId you visit various other institutions for the express purpose of examining their condition with a view of informing this hospital? A. Yes sir, Mr. Lakin went with me. We had not then built the new chapel, and we thought it important to have a new kitchen, and one of the objects in visiting was to get something to serve as a model for a kitchen. I examined also with reference to the general conduct for the purpose of seeing how this compared. Q. How did find the condition of the patients in those other asylums as to apparent content and well treatment as compared with this asylum? A. I think the hospital at Worcester Mass, was as noisy as anytime when I visited our own hospital. Q. In comparison with the other hospitals you visited, how did this compare in the quiet and content of the patients? A. I do not recollect my impression generally about that, but so far as I do recollect it compared well. Q. During your 8 years service was the management of the hospital progressive? A.
