1184 Q.(cont) at the close of your term of service as compared with its condition at the beginning? A. I could not tell precisely, I do not know as there was any change, we intended to have the best attendants we could get. Something has been said about having experienced attendants, that is a thing you can not very well get, these people that go in there are young people, they do not mean to make that a business for life, they do not want to live there always. you have got to teach them, unless you get them from another institution. Q. Do you know what wages they pay attendants? A. Used to pay all the way from $20 to $40 a month, perhaps there could be some classification of attendants and raise the pay the longer they stay there, I do not know that it is desirable to keep one always. Q. Did you have occasion to examine the book account of Mr.Leighton the former treasurer? A. I did, there was not a defalcation, but there were some irregularities which not ought to have been. They were building there and at a certain time they wanted to pay a bill of about $600 and there were no funds appropriated for that purpose, and Mr. Leighton let to that the department that amount and it was not paid for a long time.
